Expressing Our Gratitude

Music Video: “Thankful”

Released on Canada Day 2022, Thankful is a hip-hop music video that expresses gratitude for the gift of peace and freedom and encourages year-round remembrance.

Written and performed by three Toronto-based artists, Thankful has lyrics in English, French, and Anishinaabemowin. Filmed by a team of media graduates in Toronto’s Riverdale Park, Thankful showcases Canadian veterans from the Second World War to recent conflicts (such as Afghanistan) and includes people of all ages.

The Artists

Music, lyrics, vocals

Yanzzy

“We want to make sure that we bring us – our generation – to them (our veterans) and keep the connection … keep remembering them.”

Cuban-born Yan Carlos (known as “Yanzzy”), is a singer, songwriter, and music producer whose lyrics, based on feelings and emotions, always have a story to tell. Yanzzy’s grandfather and uncle served in the military during Cuba’s mission in Angola. His step-grandfather served in the Second World War. Yanzzy’s lyrics for this song are inspired by his relatives’ military service.
English & French lyrics, vocals

Joey Rose

“I know what it feels like to have someone close to you posted in places like Bosnia and Serbia.”

Joey (known as “Joey Rose”) is a Toronto-born hip hop artist who finds inspiration in overcoming situational and mental health challenges. His lyrics range from catchy anthems to introspective reflections to intricate rap verses. Mentored from a young age by a member of Canada’s military, Joey knows “what it feels like to have someone close to you posted in places like Bosnia and Serbia.” He wants to pay forward what was given to him and dedicates these lyrics to his father figure, James.
Anishinaabemowin lyrics, vocals

Lena Recollet

“We honour our veterans in the beginning of Pow wow before Grand Entry … The fact that I had a chance to include the language was very meaningful.”

Lena is a First Nations Anishinaabe singer, songwriter from Wiikwemkoong on Manitoulin Island who lives in Toronto-Tkaronto. Lena won the Native-American Music Award’s “Best Spoken Word Recording” in 2013 following a mentorship from Buffy Sainte Marie. She has collaborated on albums with Toronto artists Borelson and Beny Es Guerra. Her album, “I Am Woman, Kwe,” was released in 2012. The Lyrics

Intro (Yanzzy)

Every time that you leave me babe,
I don’t know where you go no more.
Every time that I see you back,
I don’t know where you go.
If I,
Am alone in this world can’t deny,
that you’re by my side …
that you’re by my side.

Breakdown (Joey)

I got family at home and
I got kids that wanna thrive ….
gotta stay alive.

I am loyal, not alone and
I got feelings deep inside …
gotta stay alive.

I can’t wait to feel my people,
see the love inside their eyes …
gotta stay alive.

All I want is to protect
my people with me in the hive …
gotta stay alive …

Verse (Joey)

I’m ready
I got hope
I keep it steady when I drive the boat
Always got the people round to stay afloat
Always got the people home to help me cope
I love you all
I’ll let you know
Love you all, can’t let it go
Love the world, let’s drop the weapons
Throwing fear out the door
I think of everything we did
Giving hope
To the kids
We so grateful and so thankful for the ones who gave the most
I’ll give it back, I promise, woah

Chorus (Yanzzy, Joey, Lena)

We’re so thankful
We’re so grateful
The world can be hateful
I don’t need to say more

I can’t show weakness
Ima just stay strong
With all my people
I know that I can’t go wrong
